How to choose the right contractor

Most advice on choosing a builder starts with getting three quotes and checking they have insurance. That’s sensible advice, but it rarely tells you which contractor is actually the right fit for your project. The better question is whether they have the experience, systems and people to deliver your particular build – and whether you’ll be comfortable working with them for the next several months. Here are the main things you need to think about.

How to compare quotes from different builders

When you have three quotes for the same job and they are all noticeably different it can be difficult to understand how everyone arrived at their numbers and if they are offering the same service. Some contractors are more expensive than others because they’ve been around longer and have well earned reputations. Sometimes it comes down to quality of work, or quality of finish, what their overheads are or even how busy they are. But there are certain checks you can make to give you as good a change as possible to unpick who is offering what.
