Renovations & Restorations

A heritage build partner your clients can trust

As specialists in historic building projects we work with architects to deliver the quality of execution and professionalism that reflects well on everyone involved.

Why architects choose to partner with Taylors

Heritage building projects often require a different approach to modern builds. Contractors don’t always understand this when they’re not working with these buildings day in day out. We’ve spent years developing the expertise to deliver on these projects, which means your vision gets the execution it deserves.

Heritage Expertise

Years of experience with listed buildings, lime plastering, conservation requirements, and traditional Cotswold natural stone construction.

Collaborative Approach

We flag problems early, discuss options intelligently, and never shift blame. Heritage projects always throw up surprises - we are well versed at handling them swiftly and discreetly.

Professional Conduct

We believe in proper documentation, clear communication, and site standards that will reflect well on both of our organisations. We understand that your reputation depends on everyone involved in the project

Finding the right contractor for your heritage project

Your designs deserve knowledgable execution.

We know when you recommend a contractor to a client, you’re putting your professional reputation on the line. Especially with a heritage build because of the sort of things that can go wrong.

Over the years we’ve been called upon to help when things go wrong. These tend to stem from:

  • Use of materials that aren’t appropriate for listed or heritage buildings
  • Incorrect repair methods that damage historic fabric and create long-term problems
  • Conservation requirements overlooked or mishandled, causing enforcement issues
  • Surprises once walls are opened up, and inexperience with dealing with them leading to inappropriate solutions

All of these things tend to result in a loss of confidence which is why choosing the right build partner matters.

Quality of delivery for heritage builds

We know it can feel like a risk recommending a contractor to a client – particularly on a heritage project where there are so many ways things can go wrong. And we understand that your reputation, and the trust your client has placed in you, depends on everyone delivering to the same standard. We’ve spent years ensuring that we have all the key areas covered.

Deep knowledge of historic structures

Understanding how these buildings behave and when to use traditional techniques versus modern methods so that your plans get executed the way you intended.

Conservation experience

Working alongside conservation officers and understand the planning requirements that come with listed building work.

Collaborative problem solving

Heritage projects generally throw up surprises. When this happens we discuss options, with you, based on our experience, and work together to find the right solution.

Local knowledge and materials

We know the buildings, the materials, and the area which makes a huge difference to the outcome of the project.

FAQs

Do I need listed building consent before work begins?
It depends on the nature of the work. Any alterations to the fabric of a listed building will usually require consent, and we can help you understand what’s needed before work begins. We’re experienced in working with conservation officers and can assist with the consent process where required.
In many cases, yes. We plan disruption carefully and communicate utility interruptions well in advance. No disconnecting your boiler in January without alternative heating arrangements.
Old buildings can throw up the odd surprise once work begins. When that happens we’ll talk you through the options and the implications before anything changes. We’ve worked with these buildings for years now and the chances are we’ll have solved this problem in the past.

Yes. All our work comes with relevant certifications and warranties on completion — including building control sign-off, materials warranties, and any specialist certifications for electrical or heating work. We also operate a stage payment schedule, which means you only pay for work once it has been completed. You’ll never be asked for money upfront for work that hasn’t happened yet.

In addition we have a set of service level agreements that we are rigorously committed to.

Every heritage property is different, and costs vary significantly depending on the scope of work, the condition of the building, and the specification. It’s likely that once we understand the parameters we can give you an indication and of course once we have scoped the project properly we can give you a detailed, transparent quote so you know exactly what you’re paying for and why.
